The Cost of Ordinary Days

He Came Home A Hero Written by April G.

Memorial Day arrives each year wrapped in sunshine.

The smell of cookouts fills the air.
Children laugh in backyards.
Families gather around picnic tables.
Flags wave gently in the summer breeze.

And while there is nothing wrong with celebrating the freedoms we enjoy, I think sometimes we move through this holiday so quickly that we forget why it exists in the first place.

Memorial Day was never meant to be just another long weekend.

It was meant to be a day of remembrance.

A day to pause.

A day to honor the men and women who left home believing in something greater than themselves and never returned.

Somewhere today, there is an empty chair.

A mother remembers the last hug she gave her child.

A husband still hears the sound of his wife’s laughter.

A daughter wishes she could hear her father’s voice one more time.

A folded flag rests carefully in a place of honor.

And a family continues learning how to live with a loss that never fully leaves.

Freedom has always carried a price.

A price paid by sons and daughters.

By mothers and fathers.

By husbands and wives.

By ordinary people who answered an extraordinary call.

Today, we remember them.

Not as names carved into stone.

Not as photographs tucked into albums.

But as people.

People who had dreams.

People who loved and were loved.

People who left behind families, friendships, favorite songs, unfinished plans, and memories that still live on in the hearts of those who knew them.

And while Memorial Day is about honoring those who never came home, I also find myself thinking about those who are still fighting battles long after their service ended.

Some wounds are visible.

Others are not.

There are veterans carrying memories they cannot forget.

There are spouses carrying burdens they rarely speak about.

There are families quietly struggling with grief, depression, anxiety, trauma, loneliness, and pain.

Sometimes the strongest-looking people are carrying the heaviest loads.

That is why today is also a good day to check on someone.

Send the text.

Make the call.

Invite them to coffee.

Sit beside them.

Listen.

You never know what battle someone is fighting behind a smile.

At Big Heart Real Life, we talk often about softness, kindness, and showing up for one another.

Maybe one of the greatest ways we can honor sacrifice is by caring for the people standing beside us right now.

By noticing.

By remembering.

By refusing to let people carry their pain alone.

You are not a burden.

You are not forgotten.

You are not alone.

There is hope, even when your mind tells you there isn’t.

There are people who want to help.

There are people who care.

And there is absolutely no shame in reaching out.

Before you leave today, take a moment.

Remember the fallen.

Pray for the grieving.

Check on the living.

And hold your loved ones a little closer.

Because every ordinary day we are given is a gift someone else never got to come home and enjoy.
